MEDSAILORS

TURKEY & GREECE

What could be better than spending a week sailing around Turkey on an incredible catamaran with 8 great mates? taking a photo and winning a trip to sail round Greece the following year!

In the late summer of 2016 seven friends and I met up in Turkey to take a little 7 day trip with MedSailors , we started off in Fethiye (close to Dalaman airport) and headed south to start our little journey and get a taste of sailing, you can check out the route here .

I'm now sitting here in depth of winter thinking what I should write about as it seems so long ago, but thought I would share a few highlights of our trip and some info for people who may want to do a similar trip one summer.

  • Getting a catamaran, so much room. We all had a double room and ensuite. Would highly recommend this over a monohull if your trip is about cruising around, especially if there's no wind

  • Our skipper's, Dal (Turkey) & Bruno (Greece) were both great guys and got involved and felt like they were part of the trip and an extension of our mates

  • Nothing is rushed, it took a couple of days to get used to the pace but once I realised we weren't going anywhere quickly we embraced it. The mornings were spent sailing to a nice remote spot to anchor up and go for a morning dip / cliff jump / paddle board before drying off and tucking into a breakfast cooked by our skippers.

  • Time to read and chill - all the time needed

  • The food was incredible, stopping in towns like Kas or Kalkan we got to explore and find a restaurant to eat some good local food

  • Butterfly Bay - an overnight sail to Butterfly Bay! This was an incredible place to wake up (see below), with the massive cliffs and empty bay we were spoilt by ancient turtles surfacing and crystal clear water.

  • MedSailors relaxed style, I was aware we were part of a group tour as such, there were 8 boats travelling together but felt we had choice and didn't have to do what everyone else was doing, we ate where we wanted, chose to go on excursions if we fancied it and if not did what we wanted to do. Would highly recommend them, particularly if you are a group of 8 and want to do your own trip. As a solo traveller it could be a bit hit or miss as you may be up for a mega chill and the people on your boat are the opposite.

  • Having a cold beer just because even if its 10:30am

  • Just chilling and hanging with 8 other legends

  • Winning a trip to any destination the following year, in December 2016 I received an email saying that I won a trip from a hashtag photo competition, was definitely worth setting up the shot below

GREEK ISLANDS

As I said above I won a trip from the above photo and decided to jump on board a trip with friends sailing around the Greek Islands.

We set off from Piraeus in Athens, and set sail to explore some islands I had never heard of (Saronic Route).  This year we knew what to expect and got straight into the chilling side of things, we found out that food is incredibly cheap there and bloody great!

Couple of highlights

  • Seeing a pod of Dolphins

  • Exploring the ancient ruins dotted about at most stops

  • Waking up for sunrise in Epidavros

  • The Food

  • The Greek Buritto

  • Awesome crew and good times
